This project encapsulates the purpose of "theater" by forming a transportive space by merging materiality, form, and historical attributes of Redlands.
This project is a design of a community theater that includes 3 different types of theaters (A proscenium theater, a black box theater, and an amphitheater.) I also designed the acoustic panels in the proscenium theater and landscaping on the site.
Located at 333 Orange Street, Redlands, CA
This project began by discovering what makes a theater a special place for visitors, participants, staff and what will make a community theater notable. The parti diagram represents the three theaters and how they are all physically and metaphorically connected to one another by a single loop. The three theaters represent the "new" referencing the way Redlands wants to incorporate more modern architecture within their community. Still, the thing that makes Redlands so special and holds its community together is its historical significance and influence, which is represented by the dashed line.

Redlands is a place filled with historical significance and a strong sense of identity and community. Redlands has multiple architectural styles including Neo-classical, Spanish, Victorian, Mission Revival, and many more. After looking at multiple precedents in Redlands, I found the most common attribute within the many styles were arches. Hence, this colonnade was created as an out layer that wraps around that building to commemorate the historical significance and styles that Redlands has.

The acoustic panels for the proscenium theater are made of wood. They differentiate in distance and height creating a wave-like effect and an upside-down arch. The arches reference the arches on the exterior. There is another layer of paneling, made of a softer material, rising from the arches representing the "new," yet being held up and supported by the arches. The extrusion of the wood panels and the hardness of the material will allow the sound to bounce off the panels reaching every person in the room. The back wall of the theater will be made of soft material for sound absorption.
Overall, the purpose of this design was to not only create a community theater, but a place where residents and visitors can enjoy theater and feel connected to Redlands.

"Theaters are more like community centers that tell stories to build community."
